The Great Hair Debacle of ’09

I decided it was time to get serious. Lines were drawn in the sand, and Brooke and I were all set to duke it out over Hair Masterpiece Theatre.

I won some battles (Samantha Fox is NOT hair); I lost some battles (The Cult IS hair).

My biggest triumph, however, was the addition of Trixter’s “Give It To Me Good.” I know, I know, they were the laughing stock of the hair community, but this song was one of my JAMS back in the day. Besides, weren’t ALL hair bands laughing stocks? Sorta?

New addition to the Kate lineup

One of our listeners requested this song the other day and I almost fell out of my chair. I totally forgot all about this song! Yes!

Stevie Nicks Fajita Roundup

Please enjoy this clip. Sally laughed so hard that she had to be resuscitated with guacamole.

Things you didn’t care to know about us.

Brooke and I have been talking a lot about the intense rash of Facebook “25 Things” notes. Some people freak out and say they are annoying, but we really want to do a second round. If you talk to Ant, ask him to do one too, OK? I don’t ever see him since I sleep until noon every day (exaggeration).

8 Random Things You Probably Never Wanted to Know About Your Friend Sally

1. My favorite part of “Purple Rain” (film version) is when Prince, I mean The Kid, is sitting by the pond, reminiscing about loss. Then “When Doves Cry” comes on and it’s just gold.

2. My favorite part of “Purple Rain” (song) is the end when you can totally hear the melody of “Diamonds and Pearls” trickle out of the keyboard. Sweetness.

3. When I was 9, my teacher called me Bon Jovi. You could say that I was a superfan.

4. Some of my best memories of the late ‘80s were created at a friend’s house. The soundtrack: Skid Row’s “Youth Gone Wild.” The entertainment? Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest on Nintendo.

5. I think Brooke should add Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumping” to the Kate library. It’s not that I’m a huge fan of the song; I just think our ‘90s shtick is incomplete without it.

6. I really wish Robin Sparkles was a real teen Canadian sensation.

7. My favorite thing in the whole world is putting Brooke on the spot … on the air.

8. The first magazine I ever read was Metal Edge. It was neither metal or edgy.
Tag! Brooke’s it!

We had some special guests in the studio today. Members of The Burn City Rollers stopped by and taught Sally (and Ripper from The Tiger) a thing or two about derby’n up. Even though I’d hate to take a hit from one of them, they are very nice ladies. Check out their Web site, get involved or just stalk them (hey, this is the Internet, after all).

The Burn City Rollers are a hoot and a holler for sure.

i found my dj hero.

after a computer motherboard and hard drive crash last week i found myself traveling through atlanta last weekend on the hunt for a new computer. while scanning all the stations to see what was going on these days with big city radio i heard a familiar voice that i  hadn’t heard in years and years. when i was a youngster in northeast alabama most of the 100k stations from atlanta came in clear. when 99x went on the air in 1992 at the beginning of the alternative turn in music i was in radio heaven. i listened non stop to great dj’s like leslie fram, steve barnes and all those spots that played for the poster hut. but the one that always caught my ear was yvonne monet with her dance oriented show ” the beat factory.” i don’t even remember why i thought it was so awesome … i’m sure it was part music, part dj … and what a name!  i’ve wanted to be on the air since i was a kid i just thought she was the sh*t. so hearing her voice last weekend was a welcomed surprise. i had tried to keep up with her a bit throughout the years. i knew that she also a dj (the wiki, wiki, wiki kind) and that was about it. after i got back to auburn on saturday i found her website and you should visit it too. i especially enjoyed her “stalker video.”

Dear Carrie Brownstein,

As the sole author of Monitor Mix, you can’t post every day. I’m glad you can’t because nearly every post is a gem. I get so excited to see your blog pop up in my RSS reader because I know that no matter what Brooke and I have been discussing from within the carpeted walls of the Kate studio, you’re going to be talking about it too. Maybe it’s just because you are a member of our target demographic, but our nostalgia-cum-reality is on the same wavelength. Call or e-mail us sometime. We should all be pals.

Sincerely,

Your Friend Sally

So friends, I can’t toot Carrie’s horn enough. If you are a Kate fan, you will be a fan of Monitor Mix. Her post today was ripped from my diary. Seriously. If keeping old tapes of 120 Minutes, various radio programs (91 Requests, I’ll never forget you and your hilarious playlist) and genuine mixtapes is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

Read today’s Monitor Mix. I dare you.
